Diego Cortez was an influential figure in the international art world. He pioneered New York City’s downtown art and music scenes. In 1981, Cortez curated a massive exhibition, New York/New Wave, which featured dozens of artists and brought the 20-year-old Jean-Michel Basquiat to public renown.
