Vanitas I: The Right of Spring (2024)

This group of Vanitas paintings is a deep exploration of the relationship between the material and the spiritual, a journey I undertake through the use of carefully chosen symbolic objects. Traditionally, this genre was used in history for meditation on mortality, materiality, and meaning.
In these works, I have contrasted antique and contemporary objects to achieve the same goal: to provide an opportunity for contemplation on cycles of life alongside questions of mortality, ethics, and the balance between intellectual or material pursuits.

I see painting as a meditation: exploring relationships I encounter through observation and experience. My greatest inspiration is working from nature, considering innate dualities as they move through varied passages of color, meaning, and form. The resulting images reflect the search for meaning as a journey through the fluidity of perception, the passing of time, and the structure of change.
