Loss, desire, and intimacy are defined — and limited — by time. They cannot be held or contained. They are simply a passage through.

Artist statement

101 Pennies
showcases three decades of photography about intimacy, loss, and desire. Designed as a mutable grid, each installation is utterly unique in its selection and sequencing of 101 images. As thoughts – or moments -

some of the work is full of direct, earthy eroticism, with bodies melting, merging, reflecting, transmuting. Other moments are childlike, wondrous, full of the kind of grace that makes you second-guess the bounds of gravity, and question the divisions between human, animal, and nature. Yet others are like a musical rest, or a breath, allowing these thoughts time to take on the weight of meaning. Taken as a whole 101 Pennies charts the many rituals we perform over a lifetime as we experience longing, collision, and unity with one another.

Alexis Martino includes work from 101 Pennies
Presented in a dynamic grid of 101 sepia-toned images, the work captures moments of raw intimacy, wonder, and stillness. Some images merge bodies in visceral ways, while others blur the line between human, animal, and nature. Together, the series reflects the rituals of longing, connection, and transformation that define shared  experiences.
